MIKATSU Outboard Troubleshooting

Engine runs unevenly or stalls in idle mode

Possible Causes - Corrective Action

 

The spark plug is dirty or does not match the type - Inspect the spark plug. Clean or replace type required.

Something is interfering with the fuel system - Check for pinched or twisted fuel hose.

Fuel is dirty or stale - Fill the gas tank with fresh, clean fuel.

The fuel filter is clogged - Clean or replace the filter.

One of the parts of the ignition system is defective - Take it to a Mikatsu master for repair.

Incorrect spark plug gap ignition - Inspect and adjust as required.

Bad contact or damaged system wiring ignition - Check wiring for wear or tear. Fasten all weak connections.

Wrong type of engine oil used - Check and replace oil with the required type.

The thermostat is defective or clogged - Take it to a Mikatsu master for repair.

Incorrectly adjusted carburetor - Take it to a Mikatsu master for repair.

Damaged fuel pump - Take it to a Mikatsu master for repair.

The air vent bolt is screwed onto fuel tank - Turn away a bolt of a ventilating aperture.

The carburetor air flap handle is removed - Return the handle to its original position.

Motor angle too high - Return to normal operating position.

The carburetor is clogged - Take it to a Mikatsu master for repair.

Incorrectly connected fuel connectors - Connect correctly.

Throttle valve incorrectly adjusted - Take it to a Mikatsu master for repair.

The engine will not start

Possible Causes - Corrective Action

 

Empty fuel tank - Fill the tank with fresh, clean fuel.

Fuel is dirty or stale - Fill the tank with fresh, clean fuel.

The fuel filter is clogged - Clean or replace the filter.

Incorrect engine starting - Read the section “STARTING THE ENGINE”.

Faulty fuel pump - Take it to a Mikatsu master for repair.

The spark plug is dirty or does not match the type - Inspect the spark plug. Clean or replace type required.

The spark plug cap does not fit well - Check and correct.

Bad contact or damaged ignition wiring - Check wiring for wear or tear. Replace Worn or torn wires.

One of the parts of the ignition system is defective - Take it to a Mikatsu master for repair. Ignition switch cable not fastened for the switch.

Secure the emergency release cable - The shift lever is engaged. Shift the lever to the neutral position.

Damaged internal parts of the engine - Take it to a Mikatsu master for repair.

Ignition switch cable not fastened for the switch - Secure the emergency release cable.

 

Starter is not working

 

Faulty part of the starter - Take it to a Mikatsu master for repair.

The shift lever is engaged - Flip the lever to the neutral position.

Engine power loss

Possible Causes - Corrective Action

 

Damaged propeller - Repair or replace the propeller.

Incorrect pitch or propeller diameter selected - Install propeller with recommended speed range.

Incorrect trim angle - Adjust the angle of the trim of the motor.

The motor is mounted on the transom at the wrong height - Set the motor to the correct transom height.

The bottom of the boat is overgrown with algae / marine organisms - Clean the bottom of the boat.

The spark plug is dirty or does not match the type - Inspect the spark plug. Clean or replace type required.

The gear housing is clogged with algae or foreign bodies - Clean the bottom of the enclosure from foreign bodies.

Something is interfering with the fuel system - Check if it is pinched or twisted fuel hose.

Obstacles in the fuel system - Clean or replace the filter.

Fuel is dirty or stale - Fill the gas tank with fresh, clean fuel.

Incorrect spark plug gap ignition - Inspect and adjust according to technical requirements.

Bad contact or damaged system wiring ignition - Check wiring for wear or tear. Replace worn wires.

One of the parts of the ignition system is defective - Take it to a Mikatsu master for repair.

Wrong type of engine oil used - Check and replace oil with the required type.

The thermostat is defective or clogged - Take it to a Mikatsu master for repair.

The air vent bolt is screwed onto fuel tank - Remove the vent screw.

Damaged fuel pump. Take it to a Mikatsu master for repair.

Incorrectly connected fuel connectors. Connect correctly.

Incorrect thermal zone of the spark plug - Inspect the spark plug and replace recommended type.

 

Excessive engine vibration

 

Damaged propeller - Repair or replace the propeller.

Damaged propeller shaft - Take it to a Mikatsu master for repair.

The propeller is clogged with algae or foreign matter bodies - Remove foreign bodies and clean the propeller.

The motor mounting bolt loosened - Tighten the mounting bolt.

Loosened or damaged king pin fist - Tighten the king pin or take it to the master for repair Mikatsu.
